AI for capital raising

How do I use AI to research family offices?

Short answer

Ask a tool like ChatGPT or Grok to run deep research on a specific person at a specific family office. Have it cover their investment history, public notes on deals they have done, and their LinkedIn profile. Treat the result as a first pass. Verify the facts that matter before you reach out or rely on them.

Start with one person at one family office

I start with a general chat tool like ChatGPT or Grok. I ask it for deep research on a named person at a named family office. I want their investment history, public notes on deals they have done, and what shows up on LinkedIn.

That gives you a first pass, not a final answer. You still check anything you plan to act on. Stick to public information and be thoughtful about how you use it.

"You could be walking to your car and tell GPT or Grok to do deep research on a certain person at a certain family office and look at their investment history."

This works in both directions. The person you are about to meet can research you the same way. At one of our events a guest told me about a call with an investor. The first ten minutes were about conservation, because both of them cared about it. The investor had seen that interest on the guest's LinkedIn. Good research helps you connect as people before you talk business.

Turn a long checklist into one prompt

One guest told me he uses our Dewey tool for first order research. He described a due diligence questionnaire with about 100 questions. Does this person have fraud issues? Any SEC history? Any FINRA history? He said having ChatGPT work through it replaces 100 Google searches.

He also said a team set up that way could replace the work of an entire employee. I would add one caution. A fast answer is not a verified answer. Use the output to decide what to check, then confirm it with primary sources.

This clip shows a guest describing how AI research cut his time on due diligence and on preparing to meet investors.

Move from general chatbots to tools built for you

I think of AI use in three phases. Phase one is general models like ChatGPT and Grok. Phase two is vertical tools built for your industry. Phase three is tools built for your exact use case, either by you or by a partner.

Phase three tools can add speed and depth. I showed one example that draws on 88 websites and does deep research in 30 seconds. That would take an assistant about four hours.

In this webinar I walk through the three phases of AI use and show tools built for capital raisers and investors.

I also like to compare answers. When I was improving one of our tools, I had Claude, Gemini, Grok and GPT open at the same time. Different models give you different perspectives, and the overlap tells you where to look harder.

This session shows how a multi-perspective tool combines deep data so you do not have to open three or four tools.

More from my talks

Before you run any AI research, check what kind of family office you are looking at. Early on we learned that multi-family offices are more easily identified. They more often have websites and they speak at events more often. That means a research tool will usually find a lot more about them than about a single family office. When the AI comes back thin on a single family office, do not read that as a dead end. It may mean the public footprint is small, so you may need an introduction or a conversation to fill in the picture.

"We realized early on that attracting single family offices is more value per hour and dollar spent than just family offices in general, because some are multi-family offices. Those are more easily identified, they more often have websites, and they speak at events more often."

Next moves

  1. Pick one family office and one decision maker on your target list.
  2. Ask a general AI tool for deep research on their investment history, public deal notes and LinkedIn.
  3. Write your own due diligence checklist and have the tool work through it.
  4. Verify every important fact with primary sources before you reach out.
  5. Compare answers across two or three models and note where they agree.

Follow-up questions

Can AI replace manual research on a family office?

It can replace much of the first pass. One guest said a 100 question checklist replaced about 100 Google searches. You should still verify the facts that matter.

Which AI tools do you use for research?

I start with general models like ChatGPT and Grok, and I also use Claude and Gemini. I then move to tools built for a specific use case.

Should I research the person before a first call?

Yes. Finding a shared interest can help you connect on a personal level early. One guest spent the first ten minutes of a call on conservation for this reason.
