What ChatGPT prompts work best for writing a pitch deck?

Short answer

The best ChatGPT prompts for a pitch deck are specific ones. Give the AI your real facts, say who the investor is, and ask for a short deck of 10 to 19 slides. Tell it not to make anything up. Then ask it to critique each slide, not only write it. Treat AI as a first draft and a reviewer. You still own the judgment.

Give it your facts and a clear rule against inventing

I do not have one magic prompt for pitch decks. What I see work is specificity. Paste in your real numbers, your team, your track record and your deal terms. Say who will read the deck. Then tell the AI to use only what you gave it and to ask you questions when something is missing.

That last rule matters most. Behind our own AI tools there is a page or page and a half document of prompts and processes. It tells the AI to ask this, look for this, clarify this, don't hallucinate and don't use outside data. A pitch deck with made up numbers is worse than no deck.

This clip explains how the prompts behind our AI tools are built and why they matter.

Prompts worth trying on your draft

These are starting points, not a formula. Change the wording to fit your deal.

  • Outline a 12 slide deck from the facts below. Use only these facts. Ask me questions if anything is missing.
  • Act as a family office investor. Read this deck text and list the five questions you would ask before taking a meeting.
  • Cut the text on this slide by 20 percent. Keep every number I gave you.
  • Tell me which slides should be replaced by a visual, and what the visual should show.
  • Summarize this deck in one paragraph the way a busy investor would.

Why shorter prompts and shorter decks win

Most decks I see run 40 to 70 pages. Most should be 10 to 19 pages. So tell the AI your slide limit up front. Otherwise it will happily write you a long deck that nobody finishes.

Here is the test I give people. Put the word Mickey Mouse on page 27 of a 44 page deck. Ask your business partner and your spouse to look for mistakes. They will probably miss it.

"If your own spouse will not read your pitch deck, an investor probably won't either."

The more valuable the investor, the less time they have. Some will ask an AI to summarize your deck before they decide whether to meet. That is why the summary prompt above is worth running on your own deck first.

This workshop clip covers deck length, the one pager and how we score pitch decks.

Use AI as a second pair of eyes

Writing is only half the job. The other half is review. We built Pitch Score for this, and it has been used 800 times in our community. You put in your deck and it analyzes it 25 ways. It might point out that you have almost no visuals, or that the deck is too long.

I tell people to treat the result as 25 sides of a Rubik's Cube. You know your industry best. The tool just looks at your deck from many directions so you can decide what to improve.

Here I explain how Pitch Score reviews a deck and how to read its feedback.

How AI Is Changing Investor Due Diligence, Deal Structuring & Capital Raising

One more point. Many sponsors talk to a securities attorney about how a deck describes returns or risk before it goes to an investor. AI can tighten your wording. It is not a substitute for professional advice.

More from my talks

One more habit I push on people is to write the one-pager after the deck, not before. Finish the pitch deck first, then strip out the best one to three visuals and put them on the one-pager. When you ask an AI to critique your deck, ask which visuals are strongest. Many raisers have a long deck but nothing concise that gets someone motivated to open it. The one-pager is that short piece, and it should borrow from the deck.

"The first one is that their materials don't do them justice, and they're actually hurting them. The second is they don't have a one-pager. They have a pitch deck, but they have nothing concise that then gets someone motivated to open a 42 page pitch deck."

From a Family Office Club event talk

"Then what you do is take those best one, two or three visuals and you put those onto your one pager. So make your pitch deck strong first, strip the best visuals, and put them on your one pager."

From one of Richard's talks

On the record

  • Pitch Score has been used 800 times in the Family Office Club community and analyzes a deck 25 ways.
  • Most pitch decks run 40 to 70 pages, while most should be just 10 to 19 pages.
  • The prompts behind our AI tools sit in a document of about a page or a page and a half, including instructions not to hallucinate and not to use outside data.

  3. 3Run a critique prompt where the AI plays an investor and lists its questions.
  4. 4Cut the text on each slide and swap text for visuals where you can.
  5. 5Consider talking to a securities attorney about the final deck before it goes out.

More questions on this

Should I let ChatGPT write the whole pitch deck?

I would not. Use it for outlines, tightening and critique, and write the key claims yourself from your own facts. Make sure you can stand behind every statement in the deck.

How long should an AI-assisted pitch deck be?

Aim for 10 to 19 pages. Most decks are 40 to 70 pages and most investors will not read that much.

Is there a tool built specifically for scoring a pitch deck?

Yes. Our Pitch Score tool analyzes a deck 25 ways. Treat its feedback as input to your own judgment and not as a final answer.
